The Cochrane Lions has made a $1,500 donation to Kids Cancer Care to help youth enjoy Camp Kindred.
Keith Garner, the club’s ways and means director, says during February, many of the 48,000 clubs of Lions International provide support for children’s cancer programs.
He says they have supported Kids Cancer Care in the past and believe in the important role they play in helping children and their families in their struggles with cancer.
Katie Hilton, director of nursing and outreach for Kids Cancer Care, says such donations mean the world to their charitable organization.
“Donations are absolutely vital to enable us to continue running our programs and services,” says Hilton. “We don’t get any government funding, and we are completely reliant on donations, so it means so much to us as an organization.”
Kids Cancer Care strives to meet the needs of the whole family at each stage of the cancer journey, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.
Among them are outreach programs, cooking and care programs, summer camps, educational programs, and programs that provide mental, physical, and coping skills during and after cancer goes into remission.
Garner says the club’s support of a multitude of community causes is made possible through the proceeds from such things as its annual rodeo, the Cochrane Lions Event Centre, and the joint Lions-Rotary Bow RiversEdge Campground.
“Whatever we make, we give it away. We don’t keep anything back.”
